Dentists recommend the use of a sports mouthguard, a flexible plastic appliance that is worn during athletic and recreational activities to help prevent broken teeth and jaw injuries that can occur from blows to the face or mouth.
Athletes who participate in basketball, baseball, football, hockey, wrestling, soccer, lacrosse, as well as recreational sports such as skateboarding and bicycling should wear mouthguards while engaged in these activities. Sports mouthguards are a “must” for patients that wear orthodontic appliances.
Types of Mouthguards:
Over-the-Counter Mouthguards. These come in a few varieties: 1) standard-stock, or non-fitted mouthguards are not recommended; 2)“boil and bite” mouthguards are designed to be warmed in hot water and fitted in the mouth by pressing softened acrylic to mold it to the teeth. It can be very difficult to achieve a proper fit with these products.
Custom-fitted Mouthguards. These are designed by our doctors to specifically fit your mouth. We work with a dental laboratory to fabricate our custom mouthguards. Because they are custom, it is possible to achieve a much better fit than over-the-counter types, and offer the greatest level of protection.
